History of Big Boy
The first Big Boy restaurant was called Bob’s Pantry and was opened in 1936 in Glendale, California. Founder Bob Wian garnered local popularity after adding a double decker burger to the menu. The so-called Big Boy Hamburger was named after a 6-year-old regular customer that would sometimes help clean up in exchange for a burger, named Richard Woodruff.
The iconic mascot for the brand was soon after drawn on a napkin by another regular customer, Ben Washam, an illustrator for Warner Brothers. The drawing was a caricature drawing of Richard Woodruff serving up the Big Boy Hamburger. The character has undergone revision several times over the decades but remains the face of this popular chain of restaurants.
As of 2016 there are nearly 100 locations of Big Boy in the United Sates and, surprising to many, over 250 locations in Japan!
