In 1986 the first Checker’s restaurant was opened by founders James E. Mattei and Mark B. Reed in Mobile, Alabama. Within three months the double drive-in fast food restaurant with no dine-in area was expanded to three more locations. In 1987 investor Herbert Brown from Florida joined the team and he and Mattei grew the chain to include locations in Florida which were remarkably successful.
The concept of very fast, quality food that was inexpensive caught on. The restaurants were able to serve more people with less overhead of the dine-in chains which fueled their profitability. The flashy sign and logo combined with a 1950’s deco style building made the brand easily recognizable.
In 1999 a very successful merger with Rally’s, another double drive through chain, brought the many Midwest locations of the Rally’s chain on board. Although they still have separate names, the style and menu of both chains follow the Checker’s legacy. Checker’s has over 780 locations across the U.S. as of 2014.
