Since its founding in 1947 by college football great Alex “Shoney” Shoenbaum, Shoney’s has expanded from a humble drive-in by his father’s bowling alley in Charleston West Virginia to a beloved national chain with over two hundred locations across the South-Eastern United States.
Shoney’s spread rapidly from the 1950s when its first franchise opened in Roanoke Virginia. Shoney’s was so successful with family diners that it even created spin-off brands, some of which, such as Captain D’s, are still popular dining favorites to this day.
In 2007 David Davoudpour, the largest Franchise owner of Church’s Chicken, acquired the company and has updated the menu while keeping old favorites as well as modernizing the look and style of many Shoney’s locations.
