Nearly all of the research that I feature will include experiments on animals that are being used to model human diseases. Aside from the fact that these diseases impair the animals’ quality of life, these animals may also be subject to further procedures/treatments with adverse effects on the animals’ health. Additionally, animal research is frequently concluded with sacrifices of the animals for the purpose of post-mortem studies. I want to be clear in saying that all research on this website is conducted in accordance with rules regulating the treatment and care of research animals, such that the minimum possible numbers of animals are used and all suffering is minimized. These rules are imposed by funding organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (see NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals) and/or by the academic home institutions.
